Grama Shakthi

It has been recognized that the dependency mentality crippling personal initiatives, the inadequate proportion of participation of women in the decision making process although they form half of the population, planning for community development lying in the hands of outsiders who are less sensitive of the realities encountered by the suffering people and lack of access to capital for the poor and its unequal distribution with other factors help perpetuating poverty. The removal of these factors is necessary to alleviate poverty. It has been proven in our country that if information, decision making power and resources are provided to the poor communities, they would effectively manage those resources to overcome poverty.

Poor households do not form strong economic units individually. Therefore it would be more effective if the poverty eradication initiatives adopt a holistic approach for community development while giving priority to the poor, to women and to the youth within the community. Inclusive and accountable community institutions are necessary to ensure that poor benefit from the development opportunities created by the government and the private sector for the people through collaboration. Community driven collaborative development approach can produce a platform in each village for this purpose. Grama Shakthi policy initiative will help crate this platform to alleviate poverty.

All government, non government and private sector agencies will receive an open invitation to let people know the space available in their programs for the poor to benefit. Let’s eradicate poverty adopting the virtues of unity, self esteem, accountability, trust, realism, thrift, transparency, equality, consensus and sincerity.
